Strengthening Global Health Links: Wuhan Delegation Visits African Centre for Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture

The African Centre for Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (ACCMA) in Johannesburg had the privilege of hosting a high-level delegation from China, led by Mr. Zheng Yun, Director of the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission. The visit signified another important milestone in deepening collaboration between China and South Africa in the field of traditional medicine.
During the meeting, Mr. Zheng Yun engaged in a comprehensive discussion with Dr Zijing Hu, the Chairperson of ACCMA, focusing on the current status of Chinese medicine in South Africa and the potential avenues for future growth. Both parties emphasised the significance of integrating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) into the local healthcare system to complement conventional medical practices.
Mr. Zheng Yun praised the efforts of the ACCMA in raising awareness and acceptance of TCM among South African communities, saying, “The increasing popularity of Chinese medicine here reflects its universal appeal and efficacy. By sharing knowledge and resources, we can strengthen its role as a trusted form of healthcare.”
Dr Zijing Hu outlined the centre’s recent achievements, including successful patient outcomes and growing interest in acupuncture and herbal medicine therapies. Discussions also touched on the prospects of introducing advanced training for South African practitioners, collaborative clinical trials, and the establishment of an exchange program for healthcare professionals between Johannesburg and Wuhan.
The visit included a guided tour of the ACCMA’s treatment and research facilities, where the delegation observed demonstrations of acupuncture techniques and herbal therapy applications. The delegation expressed admiration for the centre’s dedication to delivering patient-centered care and its contributions to promoting TCM as an effective healthcare option.
This visit further strengthened the relationship between Wuhan and Johannesburg in the field of health and wellness. It highlighted shared ambitions to enhance healthcare access and innovation through cultural exchange and collaboration.
